TMG’s Andrew Hanelly Presents the Future of Websites at AM&P Event

TMG’s Andrew Hanelly Presents on The (Successful) Website of the Future for Association and Media Publishing’s Lunch and Learn

Washington DC (September 21, 2011) – Last week TMG’s Director of Digital Strategy Andrew Hanelly discussed the future of the web and the five ways to future-proof your website. Hanelly purposely avoided making a grand declaration about the future of the web and instead focused on how associations can stay relevant online.

Andrew’s presentation can be viewed here: http://www.slideshare.net/TMG_Custom_Media/the-future-of-websites

To future-proof your website, Andrew advises that you make it:

1. Simple
o Boil down your association’s core offering and avoid a crowded, cluttered homepage
o Conduct 5-second usability test
o Conduct homepage audit
o Focus groups, surveys, data analysis

2. Portable
o Check analytics to see % breakdown of your users
o Replace Flash elements with HTML or JavaScript
o Create strategy first for mobile friendly then mobile app (if necessary)

3. Fast
o Both search engines and humans reward speedy websites
o Check site load speed
o Simple sights load faster

4. Human
o Social media should be a layer, not a silo
o Show the human side of your organization
o Take inventory of your outposts
o Investigate where your audience socializes online

5. Interesting
o Content on your site can be your longest lasting asset
o Take inventory of potential sources of content
o Find assets that can be shared in multiple formats
