If This Post Were a Search Engine Results Page

by Andrew Hanelly on August 10, 2011

search engine result page

And each phrase was a result (18.2%)

With a percentage next to it (10.1%)

Measuring the respective clicks each sentence gets (7.2%)

You’d quickly see (4.8%)

In an overly dramatized fashion (3.1%)

That getting clicks (2.8%)

Is largely dependent (1.9%)

On the position (1.8%)

That your link has earned (1.5%)

On a given query. (1.0%)

Still thinking of SEO as optional? (If so, you better hope they go to page two.)

[Data source: The Value of Organic Search Rankings]

[Update: SEW has an interesting post on the math behind these numbers which calls into question low CTRs on the search engine results provided by the data source referenced which you can read here.

But the point remains: it’s important to be as close to the top as possible, and getting there is increasingly competitive. HT to @roy_jackie for the link)
